Indian air force gets Awacs plane

India is the first country in South Asia to operate an Awacs aircraft India has officially taken delivery of an Awacs early-warning surveillance aircraft, part of a $1bn (£600m) defence deal with Israel.

The plane, Russian-made but packed with Israeli radar, is expected to reinforce India's maritime security following the attacks on Mumbai last year.

Only a few non-Nato countries have Awacs and critics say it is a bad omen for the arms race in South Asia.
India has ordered another two AWACS as it upgrades its military capabilities.

The Ilyushin-76 - which arrived in India on Monday - gives India the capability to track hundreds of aircraft and potential threats at sea and on the ground, at considerable distances.

Air dominance

India is the first country in South Asia to own an Awacs (Airborne Warning and Control System) plane, popularly nicknamed the "eye in the sky". The second and third aircraft are expected to be handed over next year.

AK Antony (left) is concerned about the plane's late delivery Analysts say the purchase, part of a 2004 deal involving India, Israel and Russia, is part of India's efforts to achieve air dominance over its rival, Pakistan. Russia and Israel are India's two largest military suppliers.

India's defence procurement is expected to rise to about $100bn over the next ten years.

Delhi recently signed contracts with Israel for medium range surface-to-air missiles, and with Russia for the design and development of fighter aircraft.

Other foreign defence companies, including those from the Americas, Europe and Asia, are also lining up to do business with India.

Indian Defence Minister AK Antony, who attended the Awacs handing-over ceremony at Jamnagar air base, complained about the late delivery of defence equipment ordered by India from a number of countries.
He pointed out that the Awacs should have been delivered 18 months ago. BBC

Twitter plans celebrity competition TV series

Twitter - the microblogging website-which allows contributors to post the minutiae of their lives - is considering bringing its succinct style to television.

The social networking site is working with Reveille Productions and Brillstein Entertainment Partners to develop an unscripted series based on the popular website, which invites members to post messages that are no longer than 140 characters.

Players would use Twitter as they tracked celebrities in an interactive, competitive format, the show’s producers announced. “Right now, Twitter is an incredible technological and cultural phenomenon,” said Amy Ephron, the executive producer who created the concept for the TV programme. The proposed series would break ground on television by bringing the immediacy of microblogging to the television screen, producers said.

“It captures what’s best about Twitter, and it’s a compelling TV show in its own right,” said Noah Oppenheim, head of unscripted development for Reveille. Like Miss Ephron, he was tight-lipped on any details about the show, its format, even its title. He said the partners are saving the details for their upcoming pitch meetings with networks.

Reveille’s scripted entertainment includes ‘The Office’ (NBC), ‘Ugly Betty’ (ABC) and ‘The Tudors’ (Showtime), plus reality programming that includes ‘The Biggest Loser’ and ‘American Gladiators’ (both NBC). Trade newspaper Variety said Twitter’s deal with Reveille and Brillstein is to develop a TV show “putting ordinary people on the trail of celebrities in a revolutionary competitive format”. Twitter has been adding millions of users a month and its website received 32.1 million unique visitors in April according to a tracking firm comScore. courtesy telegraph/afpa

Tehran blocks access to Facebook

Wednesday, May 27, 2009 0 comments

Iran has blocked access to social networking site Facebook ahead of June's presidential elections, Iran's Ilna news agency and web users say.

Ilna says the move is aimed at stopping supporters of reformist candidate Mir Hossein Mousavi from using the site for his campaign.

Facebook, which says it has 175m users worldwide, expressed its disappointment over the reported ban.

So far there has been no comment from the Tehran authorities.

'Access not possible'

"Access to the Facebook site was prohibited several days ahead of the presidential elections," Ilna reported.

Mr Mousavi was Iran's prime minister when the post was abolished in 1989 It said that "according to certain Internet surfers, the site was banned because supporters of Mir Hossein Mousavi were using Facebook to better disseminate the candidate's positions".

CNN staff in Tehran reported that people attempting to visit the site received a message in Farsi that said: "Access to this site is not possible."

Facebook expressed disappointment that its site was apparently blocked in Iran "at a time when voters are turning to the Internet as a source of information about election candidates and their positions".

Mir Hossein Mousavi, a former prime minister, is seen as one of the leading challengers to incumbent President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in the 12 June elections.

His page on Facebook has more than 5,000 supporters.

British couple fly to US to adopt cat

Tuesday, May 19, 2009 0 comments

A London couple travelled nearly 4,000 miles to the US state of Michigan to adopt a cat. Rose and Chris Rasmussen flew to Harrison to adopt Sparky the cat from the Clare County animal shelter, reports the Daily Telegraph. The Rasmussens discovered Sparky on Petfinder.com, a pet adoption website. They could have had him shipped to the London suburb where they live, but instead decided to make the journey to adopt their new pet.
“He took me here on the other side of the Atlantic,” Rose Rasmussen said. “I thought they would say, ‘You guys are completely mad’.” Paperwork, a rabies vaccination, a six-month quarantine and other formalities followed before Sparky was cleared to depart for Britain. Dave Gendregske, the animal control director for the county, said, “A lot of people would ask, ‘Why come from England?’ When people meet Sparky, find he has a dynamic personality, they fall in love with him.” ananova

China sex theme park comes to abrupt end

China’s first sexually explicit theme park was torn down before it even started, after an outcry from officials, a Chinese newspaper reported on Monday.
Love Land, set to open in October in the southwestern city of Chongqing, featured exhibits on sexual history and how-to workshops, the China Daily newspaper reported last week.
A picture of the park entrance showed a signboard with the park’s name straddled by a giant pair of women’s legs topped by a red thong. But the plans left Chongqing officials red-faced. They ordered the park torn down over the weekend. Officials called the planned park “vulgar, ill-minded and misleading”, said the paper. Many Chinese citizens apparently agreed.
The park had drawn controversy on the Internet, with some calling it too much, even for fast-living Chongqing, while others praised it as a step forward for sexual candour. reuters

London bids to be world’s greenest city by 2012

Mayor Boris Johnson outlined plans to make London ‘the cleanest, greenest city on earth’ by the 2012 Olympics and called for commitments from other world cities at a climate change conference. Leaders of the world’s 40 largest cities, plus 17 affiliate municipalities, are meeting in Seoul this week for a summit on combating global warming — the third to be held since 2005. He told a press conference the world’s cities consume 75 percent of its energy and produce 80 percent of the emissions which cause climate change. “The problem of our planet is an urban problem,” Johnson said, calling for “serious results” in Seoul. “I don’t want to walk away with a communique which contains nothing but warm words and hot air... it’s important that we agree to some specific measures.” He said the British capital wants to use the Olympics “to drive the greening and the improvement of our city” and noted that London is committed to reduce carbon emissions by 60 percent by 2025. Johnson said the key measure was addressing the problems relating to domestic and commercial buildings, which accounted for 70 percent of carbon dioxide emissions in London. This involved retrofitting — installing lagging — in large numbers of public buildings. Johnson proclaimed himself a ‘passionate cyclist’ and said he would push ahead with cycle super-highways around London. afp

Bollywood action hero Akshay Kumar was arrested on suspicion of obscene behaviour during a recent fashion show in Mumbai, police said. A complaint had been lodged against Kumar and his wife, Twinkle Khanna, after she was photographed unbuttoning a pair of jeans that the actor was modelling on the catwalk at the Lakme Fashion Week. “I can confirm that Akshay Kumar came to Vakola police station (in Mumbai) with his lawyer and surrendered himself,” assistant commissioner of police Arvind Mahdadi told AFP. “He was arrested under section 294 of Indian Penal Code and was given bail.” Twinkle Khanna was arrested and bailed last month. Kumar, 41, has said he did not mean to cause any offence by his actions and apologised. The arrest came as he returned to India after filming abroad. “The news blew up when I was away,” he joked in an interview with the Hindustan Times newspaper. “I just want to make it home from the airport without my car being egged by all those who have never been unbuttoned by their wives,” he added with a tone of sarcasm. afp

Taliban, India both are threat for Pakistan: Musharraf

WASHINGTON: Former President Gen (r) Pervez Musharraf has said that Taliban and India both are threat for the Pakistan stressing Pakistan must have to keep close eye on both.

In an interview with foreign media, Former President Gen (r) Pervez Musharraf has said that Pakistan army is the real strength of Pakistan. The large number of deployment of the troops by India on border is a constant threat to Pakistan’s integrity.

However, India would never attack Pakistan at all because, because it know strength of Pakistan. However, Pakistan must have to maintain minimum deterrence force to avoid Indian attack, he added.

In response to a question he said that 500% there is no need of any mindset. These aspersions are cost by those who want to weaken Pakistan. Anyone who wants to weaken Pakistan attacks the Pakistan army and ISI, he held.

Pakistan army is an extremely discipline army. It is carries out orders from the top and army leadership carries out orders form the government.

In response to a question pertaining to supporting of Taliban, Pervez Musharraf strongly rejects the allegations and termed these accusations baseless. He said that after the 9/11 incident Pakistan army had arrested around 700 Taliban. All the Al-Qaeda leaders were arrested by Pakistan so how could Pakistan support Taliban? It is a ridiculous accusation, he added.
He said that the international community must support Pakistan instead of criticizing it. He said that drone attacks are halting the course of war on terrorism and it is causing great resentment and anti-America sentiments among the masses. He said that he like former US President G. W Bush, but he is not among his followers.

While taking about the Karzai, Pervez Musharraf said that Afghan President Hamid Karzai is double dealing with Pakistan. He said that Karzai would be hiding things from Pakistan.
He said that Karzai knew the issues and he is causing trouble to Pakistan by not addressing these issues with Pakistan.

Gen (r) Pervez Musharraf said that in a situation like this, the basic requirement is the unity of thoughts and action by the all; the Afghanistan government, coalition forces and within the coalition forces other forces.

He further said that there has to be a unity of thoughts and action in Pakistan by Central government, Provincial government and army. Unfortunately, the unity of thoughts is not there, he added.

Replying to another question Gen (r) Pervez Musharraf has said that he had warned former prime minister of Pakistan Benazir Bhutto of threats to her life.

Benazir Bhutto sent him a special message indicating that there are certain terrorists groups in Karachi, who supposedly come in Karachi and wanted to attack her, he told.

In Rawalpindi, where she addressed a gathering in Liaqat Bagh is heavily congested and the thickest part of the city. This is the place which is the main square and tall buildings all around, he said by adding that government told her not to come but that was what happen to her.

I stand by Pakistan, rather than Taliban or military operation: Imran Khan

LAHORE: Chairman Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI) Imran Khan has warned military operations either they have taken place in Lal Masjid or Balochistan or Waziristan and Swat have led to dire consequences adding he stands by Pakistan rather than Taliban or military operation.

PTI Chairman said this while talking to journalists during his visit to PTI relief camp set up in Akbar Chowk for displaced persons of Swat Sunday.

Had water and electricity supply been disconnected in Lal Masjid, people would have come out but the government carried out military operation despite efforts of Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain, he alleged. Now after lapse of 12 days of implementation of Nizam-e-Adl , it was announced there was no option left except military operation., he remarked.

“We will ask in National Conference what had made the military operation inevitable. Operation was launched when president Asif Ali Zardari was meeting with President Obama. We will seek explanation from the government as to how the extremists had succeeded before demanding for end to military operation as I think exodus of 2 to 2.5 people is success of extremists”, he underlined.

No precedence is available in the history of nations that helicopter gun ships were used against people of own country, he regretted.

“We are not with Taliban who have cut throats of army personnel and neither we stand by those who are conducting military operation. We stand besides Pakistan”, he announced.

US senator had told drone attacks were being carried out with the consent of government of Pakistan, he said adding if it was proved as such then any one could file case against the government in this respect.
